Deep Fried Butter

Deep Fried Butter

Just when we thought that everything had been deep fried that could be, along comes the next abomination. As if frying things like candy bars, Twinkies and even bacon, we just couldn't stop until we took one of the most unhealthy food items and cooked it in the most unhealthy way possible. Welcome to a world where deep fried butter exists.
A basket of deep fried butter balls.
Deep fried butter made its debut at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, a place where nothing is off limits when it comes to the deep fryer. Every year the vendors at the fair try to one up each other with their fried creations. With all of the heart-attack inducing treats being cranked out every year, the fair has been called the "Fried Food Capital of Texas." Just of Texas? Does that mean there is a place somewhere else in the country that boasts more fried goodness? One would have to hope not.
Dallas resident Abel Gonzales Jr. is the creator of fried butter. It's no surprise since his past award-winning creations include fried peanut butter and jelly, fried Cole, fried cookie dough and more. We'll get to fried coke later.
So ow does it work? No one likes to eat butter on its own. So do you just toss a stick in some batter and fry it up? There's a little more to it than that. Gonzales has his own special recipe for fried butter. First he takes 100 percent pure butter and whips it until it is fluffy and light. The butter is then frozen and surrounded with dough. What results are little dough balls of butter that are then put into the fryer.
Gonzales also serves plain butter balls for people that want it. People actually want to eat plain balls of butter? Actually it's not that surprising. There are other flavors of deep fried butter balls like cherry, grape or garlic.
The fried butter has become extremely popular at the fair with seemingly no one saying they dislike it. Some liken it to eating a buttery roll or biscuit. The powdered sugar sprinkled on top also adds a little bit of sweetness to it. So it seems that it's like eating a biscuit that is totally full of butter. When people purchase an order of deep fried butter, they get four dough balls. Any more than that would be overkill, according to Gonzales, as if eating deep fried butter wasn't enough already.

Other Fried Creations

Frying foods that are already unhealthy as it is has become a new tradition in America. It's also nothing new since the first Oreo cookie was deep fried. We have now seen things like candy bars, bacon, ice cream and even Coke deep fried. Time to look at some of the crazy food creations made just for the glutton in us all.

The donut burger is just that. It's a burger that swaps out the bun for two donuts. Krispy Creme glazed donuts no less. This heart stopper is nicknamed the Luther Vandross in Georgia with it's burger patty topped with cheese and bacon on two big donuts. Another popular item is the fried peanut butter, jelly and banana. But the biggest head scratcher for those that haven't had it is deep fried Coke. Many people wonder how this is even possible until they see it. Fried Coke is made using batter that is flavored with Coke and then frozen. The batter is then deep fried and covered with Coke syrup, cinnamon sugar, whipped cream and a cherry on top. The same guy that invented fried butter made this prior to his latest creation. He even won an award for "Most Creative" at the annual food competition that takes place at the Texas State Fair. Fried Coke was extremely popular with people at the fair. 10,000 cups of the fried beverage sold in the first two weeks of the fair. The treat was even featured on the show Bizarre Foods hosted by Andrew Zimmer on the Travel Channel. If people think that a cup of fried Coke is unhealthy, they would be right. A single cup has 830 calories in it. I bet it would be good with a little chocolate sauce on top.

Deep Fried Paradise

It's no secret that people love fried foods. However, every time someone comes up with something new to fry, there are people that get all up in arms over health and stuff like that. Yes, deep fried foods are not healthy, but most people know that while others simply choose to ignore that fact. Eating a deep fried food will not kill you as long as you don't do it all the time. Everything is fine in moderation. The problem is that obesity is getting worse and worse in America and people attribute it to fried foods like these. Well, the good thing about this country is that people have the right to do what they want and and eat what they want. To quote the great Ron Swanson, " The whole point of this country is if you want to eat garbage, balloon up to 600 pounds and die of a heart attack at 43, you can!" That is what we like to call freedom and that's what being an American is all about.
In all seriousness, there's nothing wrong with indulging in a fried foods once in a while. Besides, what does it say when we stop being creative and coming up with new fried foods? If we don't try it, how will we ever know it can or cannot be done? The Texas State Fair is the place where great food minds come together every year to see who has come up with the best idea in fried foods. They simply make the dishes. They are not the ones force feeding it to people. That is a choice. If people don't know how to make good decisions, then it's their own fault .
